About FARRO

Simply Balanced Farro is a minimally processed cooked grain product from Target's Simply Balanced line, which was one of the earlier clean-label and better-for-you private label brands at Target before the launch of Good & Gather in 2019. Simply Balanced focused on organic, non-GMO, and wholesome ingredient products. This farro product contains only two ingredients: water and farro.

Farro is an ancient wheat grain — specifically emmer wheat (Triticum dicoccum) — that has been cultivated in the Mediterranean and Middle East for thousands of years. Because it is a wheat variety, it contains gluten and is not suitable for those with celiac disease or wheat sensitivity. It also contains gliadin proteins related to those in common wheat, though some individuals with gluten sensitivity report tolerating farro differently than modern wheat — this should not be assumed safe without individual testing.

Nutritionally, this cooked farro delivers 133 calories per 100g with 29.33g of carbohydrates, 3.33g of protein, 0.67g of fat, and 2.7g of dietary fiber. These values reflect the cooked (hydrated) weight, which is more practical for consumer use than dry grain values. Farro is notable among grains for its relatively higher protein and fiber content compared to white rice or standard pasta.

Simply Balanced Farro works as a base for grain bowls, can be tossed with roasted vegetables and a lemon vinaigrette, mixed into soups, or served as a hearty side alongside braised meats. Its nutty, slightly chewy texture is more satisfying than many refined grains. It is dairy-free, egg-free, and nut-free, though it is not gluten-free.
