Editorial Policy

How we create, verify, and maintain the accuracy of nutrition content on Nutosa.

Our Editorial Philosophy

Nutosa exists to provide free, accurate, and easy-to-understand nutrition information. We recognize that people use our data to make real decisions about their health — from managing dietary restrictions to planning meals for their families. This responsibility shapes everything we publish. Our editorial standards are designed to ensure that every piece of content on this site is factual, well-sourced, and helpful.

We do not publish content for the sake of search engine rankings. Every page we create must serve a genuine informational purpose for our users. If we cannot verify a claim with a credible source, we do not publish it.

How Nutrition Data Is Sourced

All nutrition data displayed on Nutosa comes from the USDA FoodData Central database, which is maintained by the Agricultural Research Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. We use two primary datasets:

SR Legacy (Standard Reference) — This dataset contains research-grade nutrient profiles developed through laboratory analysis of food samples. Nutrient values in the SR Legacy dataset are determined through standardized analytical methods, including chromatography for vitamins, atomic absorption spectroscopy for minerals, and Kjeldahl analysis for protein content. These are the same values relied upon by clinical nutritionists, researchers, and medical professionals.

Branded Food Products Database — This dataset includes nutrition label data from packaged and branded foods, contributed by food manufacturers through the USDA Global Branded Food Products Database program. Values are sourced directly from manufacturers and reflect what appears on the Nutrition Facts label.

We do not generate, estimate, or interpolate nutrient values on our own. What you see on Nutosa is what the USDA has published.

How Content Is Created

Editorial content on Nutosa — including guides, articles, and feature descriptions — is created by our team with the support of AI writing tools. Here is how our process works:

1. Research: Before any content is drafted, we identify the topic, gather relevant data from USDA and other authoritative sources (FDA, NIH, Dietary Guidelines for Americans), and outline the key points that need to be covered.

2. Drafting: Initial drafts may be created with AI assistance to ensure comprehensive coverage and consistent structure. AI is used as a writing tool — not as a source of facts. All factual claims in the draft must be traceable to a credible source.

3. Review and fact-checking: Every draft is reviewed by our editorial team. During this review, we verify all numerical values against USDA data, confirm that health-related statements align with recognized guidelines, and ensure the content is clear, accurate, and free of misleading language.

4. Publication: Only after passing editorial review is content published on the site. Published pages include a last-updated date where applicable, so users can assess the recency of the information.

Fact-Checking Standards

We hold all content on Nutosa to the following fact-checking standards:

Nutrient values must match the corresponding entry in USDA FoodData Central. If discrepancies are found, we correct them immediately.

Health claims must be supported by peer-reviewed research or official dietary guidelines. We do not make claims about curing, treating, or preventing diseases. Nutrition is not medical advice, and we make this distinction clear throughout the site.

Daily Value percentages are calculated using the FDA reference diet of 2,000 calories per day and the most current Daily Reference Values established by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Corrections and Updates

If you discover an error on Nutosa — whether it is an incorrect nutrient value, a broken feature, or a factual inaccuracy in our editorial content — please contact us immediately. We take all correction requests seriously and follow this process:

1. We verify the reported issue against the original USDA data or relevant authoritative source.

2. If the error is confirmed, we correct it as soon as possible — typically within 24-48 hours.

3. For significant corrections, we note the change on the affected page.

Content Update Schedule

Our nutrition database is updated whenever the USDA publishes new releases of the FoodData Central datasets. The USDA typically releases major updates several times per year, and we sync our data within a reasonable timeframe after each release. Editorial content (guides, articles, static pages) is reviewed on a quarterly basis to ensure continued accuracy and relevance.

Independence and Advertising

Nutosa may display advertisements to support the cost of maintaining a free service. Advertising has no influence on our editorial content, data presentation, or food rankings. We do not accept payment in exchange for favorable placement of specific foods, brands, or products. Our rankings and data are determined solely by the nutritional values reported in the USDA database.
