About LACTOSE FREE 2% REDUCED FAT MILK
Ralphs Lactose Free 2% Reduced Fat Milk is a dairy milk product from The Kroger Co. sold under the Ralphs banner, the company's Southern California supermarket chain. The milk has lactase enzyme added to break down lactose before consumption, making it tolerable for lactose-intolerant individuals who still want the nutritional benefits of cow's milk. Additional ingredients include tricalcium phosphate for calcium fortification, carrageenan as a stabilizer, guar gum and locust bean gum for texture, and vitamins A palmitate and D3. The asterisked ingredients suggest they may be optional in certain production runs.
At 54 calories per 240 milliliters with 3.3 grams of protein, 5 grams of carbohydrates, and 2.1 grams of fat, this reduced-fat milk sits nutritionally between skim and whole milk. The lactose-free processing converts lactose into glucose and galactose, which makes the milk taste noticeably sweeter than regular milk even though no sugar has been added. Dairy is the primary allergen despite the lactose reduction; milk proteins including casein and whey are fully intact and this product is not suitable for milk protein allergy or veganism.
This milk is intended as a direct substitute for regular 2% milk in all applications including drinking, cereal, coffee, baking, and cooking, with the benefit of being digestible for lactose-intolerant consumers. Carrageenan and gum stabilizers are worth noting for consumers who prefer to avoid those additives in their dairy products. Available at Ralphs locations throughout Southern California.
