About CHOPPED TURNIP GREENS

Great Value Chopped Turnip Greens is a frozen single-ingredient vegetable product sold under Walmart's Great Value store brand. Turnip greens are the leafy tops of the turnip plant (Brassica rapa subsp. rapa), a cruciferous vegetable widely consumed in the Southern United States. Per 100 grams, they provide approximately 24 calories, 2.35 g of protein, 3.53 g of carbohydrates, 0 g of fat, and 2.40 g of dietary fiber.

The sole ingredient is turnip greens. Commercially frozen turnip greens are blanched before freezing to inactivate chlorophyll-degrading enzymes and extend color and flavor stability during storage. Turnip greens are exceptional sources of vitamin K and vitamin A (as beta-carotene), and are among the richer plant sources of calcium with relatively good bioavailability compared to calcium in spinach (which is bound by oxalates). They also provide significant vitamin C, folate, and manganese. The glucosinolate gluconapin is the primary glucosinolate in turnip greens, which upon hydrolysis yields the isothiocyanate allyl isothiocyanate — the same compound responsible for the pungent heat of wasabi and horseradish, providing turnip greens with their characteristic slightly bitter, peppery flavor.

Turnip greens are nutritionally similar to collard greens and mustard greens, and are a traditional Southern U.S. side dish commonly cooked with smoked pork or seasoned broth, though the vegetable itself is entirely vegan. The Great Value product contains no added seasonings, oils, or preservatives. It is naturally gluten-free, vegan, and free from all major food allergens. At 24 calories and 2.40 g of fiber per 100 g, it is a highly efficient leafy green from both a nutritional and caloric perspective.
