About ING/NUT DONUT FRENCH CRULLER POWDERED SUGAR
Meijer French Cruller Powdered Sugar Donut is a bakery pastry sold under the Meijer brand at Meijer, Inc. supercenter stores across the Midwest. The cruller base is made from water, vegetable oil blend of palm and soybean oils, pregelatinized wheat starch, wheat starch, egg yolk, egg whites, mono- and diglycerides, sodium caseinate, leavening agents (sodium acid pyrophosphate, baking soda, sodium aluminum phosphate), salt, nonfat milk, and citric acid. The powdered sugar coating contains dextrose, corn starch, partially hydrogenated vegetable oil from soybean and/or cottonseed oil, titanium dioxide for white color, rice flour, hydrogenated cottonseed oil, and artificial flavor.
This product warrants multiple label flags. The powdered sugar coating contains both partially hydrogenated vegetable oil and hydrogenated cottonseed oil. Partially hydrogenated oils are sources of artificial trans fats; the FDA revoked GRAS status for PHOs in 2015 and required removal from most foods by 2018-2020. The presence of PHOs in the USDA database entry suggests this may be a legacy formulation predating the full transition. Sodium caseinate is a milk-derived protein and a hidden dairy ingredient. Titanium dioxide is used as a colorant; it was banned in the EU in 2022 for food use. Allergens include wheat, eggs, and milk. Per 100 grams, this cruller provides 423 calories, 28.85 grams of fat, 36.54 grams of carbohydrates, 3.85 grams of protein, and no fiber. A 52-gram serving delivers approximately 220 calories.
