Gumballs are a confectionery product with a hard candy shell encasing a chewable gum base. The primary ingredients are sugar and dextrose for sweetness, gum base (an insoluble chewing matrix typically composed of elastomers, resins, and fats), and corn syrup for binding and moisture retention. Natural and artificial flavors provide the corn or candy flavor character. Glycerin contributes to softness and moisture. The finish coating uses resinous glaze (shellac)—an insect-derived coating agent—which is not considered vegan. Tapioca dextrin and carnauba wax add to the shell hardness and shine. Yellow 5 (tartrazine) is used for the bright yellow maize color. BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene) is included as a synthetic antioxidant preservative to maintain freshness of the gum base fats.
