Sugar is the second ingredient in Meijer's Hazelnut Coffee Creamer, after water and ahead of vegetable oil, which tells you most of what you need to know about its nutritional role. Sodium caseinate provides a milk-derived protein element, and emulsifiers like polysorbate 60 and mono- and diglycerides keep the fat dispersed smoothly in coffee. Protein is essentially zero, fiber is zero, and the carbohydrate load is pure sugar. The hazelnut flavor comes from natural and artificial sources. It turns bitter black coffee into something sweet and lightly nutty, which is the job it's designed to do.
