About GREEN MARASCHINO CHERRIES, GREEN MARASCHINO

Meijer Green Maraschino Cherries are artificially colored and flavored maraschino cherries with a distinctive green color, sold under the Meijer private label for use as a baking decoration and cocktail garnish. Green maraschino cherries represent an alternative colorway to the standard red variety, created through artificial coloring rather than a naturally green cherry variety.

Ingredients are cherries, water, corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, citric acid, natural and artificial flavor, potassium sorbate and sodium benzoate as preservatives, FD&C Yellow 5 and Blue 1 dyes to create the green color, and sulfur dioxide as an additional preservative and bleaching agent. The sulfur dioxide is a sulfiting agent that must be declared and is relevant for consumers with sulfite sensitivity. Yellow 5 (tartrazine) combined with Blue 1 produces the characteristic mint-green color. Two synthetic preservative systems (potassium sorbate plus sodium benzoate, plus sulfur dioxide) are used, which is typical for long-shelf-life maraschino products.

Allergens: no standard allergens are declared, though sulfite sensitivity is a relevant consideration.

Nutritionally, a 5-gram serving (approximately one cherry) provides 10 calories and 2 grams of carbohydrates from corn syrup. Per 100 grams, values are 200 calories and 40 grams of carbohydrates.

Green maraschino cherries are most commonly used in cocktails such as the Singapore Sling and various punch bowls, as a festive garnish for desserts and banana splits, and as a decorating element in baked goods. The green color provides visual contrast in dessert presentations. Sulfite-sensitive consumers should avoid this product.
