About GENOVESE PESTO

HemisFares Genovese Pesto is a jarred premium pesto sauce imported and sold under The Kroger Co.'s HemisFares international specialty sub-brand. Genovese pesto originates from Genoa in the Liguria region of Italy and is protected by a traditional recipe combining fresh basil, olive oil, pine nuts, Parmigiano or Grana Padano cheese, and Pecorino.

This formulation uses olive oil and extra virgin olive oil as the fat base, reflecting a quality dual-oil approach. Genovese basil is the primary herb. The nut component includes both cashews and pine nuts — the inclusion of cashews is a cost-management technique common in commercial pesto, as pine nuts are expensive. Salt is present for seasoning. Grana Padano cheese (made from cow's milk, rennet, salt, and egg lysozyme as a preservative) contributes umami and saltiness. Pecorino cheese (sheep's milk, salt, rennet) adds a sharper, more pungent note. Garlic rounds out the authentic pesto profile. Egg lysozyme is an enzyme derived from egg whites used in Grana Padano production.

Per 100 grams, the product delivers 625 calories with 62.5 grams of fat (primarily from olive oil), 6.25 grams of protein, 9.38 grams of carbohydrates, and 3.1 grams of fiber. Allergens present: dairy (cow's milk in Grana Padano), dairy (sheep's milk in Pecorino), tree nuts (cashews, pine nuts), and eggs (lysozyme in Grana Padano). Contains no wheat, soy, peanuts, fish, shellfish, or sesame. Not suitable for vegans or those with nut or dairy allergies.
