About GEL FOOD COLORS, NEON
Great Value Gel Food Colors Neon (2505255 variant) is a set of gel-based food coloring products for baking decoration. The formula is built on corn syrup and sugar as the carrier, with modified corn starch for texture, and includes the synthetic dyes Yellow 6, Yellow 5, Red 3, and Blue 1 to achieve neon color effects. Carrageenan, potassium sorbate, sodium benzoate, and citric acid round out the preservative and texture system.
Red 3 (erythrosine) is a significant regulatory flag in this product. The FDA issued a ban order in January 2025 for Red 3 in food and ingested drugs based on evidence of thyroid tumors in male rats at high doses, with a compliance deadline of January 2027 for food manufacturers. This product contains Red 3 and will need reformulation before that deadline. Yellow 5 (tartrazine) can cause sensitivity reactions in some individuals, particularly those with aspirin sensitivity. Yellow 6 and Blue 1 are currently approved FD&C dyes.
No HFCS, no TBHQ, no BVO, and no PHOs are present. This product is a functional baking colorant with multiple synthetic dyes, most notably the flagged Red 3. Consumers wishing to avoid synthetic dyes, especially Red 3 ahead of its removal deadline, should seek natural food coloring alternatives.
